Providing water suppliers in Hawaii with training and technical assistance to analyze distribution system water losses using AWWA water audits.

The future of our water resources depends on resource stewardship and responsible management today. 



Four waves of interaction from May 2017 through June 2018.





Wave 1

Water loss control specialists will host several workshops on five Hawaiian Islands – Hawaii, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Kauai.

 During the workshops participants will:

  • Learn basic AWWA water auditing methodology

  • Explore how data validity is graded

  • Identify common pitfalls when completing a water audit

  • Complete a water audit using example data

After each workshop, the session leaders will meet one-on-one with county department staff to discuss the specifics of conducting a water audit for their systems.

Action Items

  • Determine how your systems have been, or have not been, exchanging water during the past two years (2015 – 2016).

  • Investigate what data you have for the volume of water entering and leaving your systems.

Wave 4

Engage with a specialist once again to ensure that the best practices have been utilized while compiling your water audit. You’ll also have a chance to review the data validity grades.

Wave 2

Speak one-on-one with water loss control specialists about your AWWA water audit.

  • Submit materials to the Hawai’I WAVE project team for review

Wave 3

Attend an in-person workshop focusing on common challenges and solutions along with advanced AWWA water auditing methodology.

Action Items

  • Review remaining questions from wave one and two.

  • Attend a session

 The specialist will review supporting documentation in advance and come prepared with questions to:

  1. Confirm that the correct methodology has been used

  2. Assess the data validity grades

This conversation is a practice session for the validation phone call during Wave 4, just before you submit your audit to the state.
